When City Slicker Farms was founded 14 years ago, there was nowhere in California’s West Oakland neighborhood to buy fresh, healthy food. One group of residents sought to transform this food desert into a community of urban gardens that have grown more than 219,000 pounds of good food and empowered thousands by providing access to their backyard garden program. And they’ve done all of this on borrowed land.
A grant secured the land for a permanent Urban Farm & Park, and City Slicker Farms now needs to turn their vacant 1.4 acre lot into a thriving community space and agricultural hub complete with a farmstand, gardens, orchard, greenhouse, and educational programs focused on urban farming and environmental sustainability.
We’re loving their “Brick By Brick Together Reward: $1/day for one year.” Join us in supporting and celebrating the work of City Slicker Farms. Every action counts. Pitch in.
What Is Barnraiser?
Ever wanted to get in on the ground floor of a new artisan bakery? What about a honey bee apiary? Or a charcuterie shop?
That’s where Barnraiser comes in. Barnraiser is a crowdfunding community designed to power healthy and sustainable food initiatives—think beekeepers, butchers, bakers, first-time farmers, and heirloom gardeners. The site offers people interested in the food movement a way to support these artisans who are changing the way Americans farm and eat.
